The big one is coming and thousands of the older 50 group of runners will take on the challenge. It's the 40th running of The ING New York City Marathon, considered one of the world's best road races and is the showcase event for the New York Road Runners Club. Last year, over 7000 participants who finished were over 50, representing nearly 20 percent of the entire field.
Some of those aging baby boomers on up who will compete for the more than $600,000 in prize money before two million cheering spectators and over 300 million worldwide television viewers are:
George Hirsch, 75, is a New York Road Runners legend having helped Fred Lebow plan the first five-borough New York City Marathon in 1976 and now, chairman of the New York Road Runners. He will be competing in the 40th running of the event on Sunday, November 1.
Dan Fitapelli, 50, of Naples, FL, but originally from Queens, will be participating in his first ING NYC Marathon on November 1 in support of Autism Speaks.
Dennis Marsella, 58, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, will be competing in his 25th New York City Marathon and 121st marathon overall. His race-day is VERY intriguing as he runs wearing a heavy dinner jacket, tie, and holds a tray withfood/drinks e race.
